After the nasty drop into Falls River, my camera was finally starting to work again. I decided to celebrate by taking Katie out to Sturgeon River Gorge. I had been there before many years ago, but was hoping to return there with her anyways, so we headed South on Wednesday afternoon planning to visit Power House Falls, Sturgeon River Falls, and Silver Mountain.
We stopped at Power House first, as I had dropped my camera before getting good pictures of these falls and we were pretty confident on the way out there. After getting pictures of both the main and some of the upper falls, we headed out to Sturgeon River first, passing by Silver Mountain for the time.
Heading down the trail, we tried to climb down the hill at the first path down. I thought that the trail zig-zagged to the left, so we headed left and found ourselves near a swampy pond along Sturgeon River with no falls in sight. The bugs were horrible down here, and we retreated quickly to our original trail a bit confused on which way to go.
At this point, Katie decided to head back to the car with Logan and I ventured along the top of the high bank until there was no choice but to go down. After climbing down to the bottom, the trail now obviously went out towards the river and I soon found the top of the falls. Taking pictures of the chute and bottom of the falls and waving at some canoes taking off in the rapids below the chute, I headed back in a half-jog to the car so Katie wouldn't get too worried.
We decided to head back to Houghton at this point, as the weather was still warm this late in the evening and the bugs were pretty bad out here. Skipping out on Silver Mountain, we went back home, though I hope to bring her back out her to the mountain later this summer.
