Queen Anne's Falls, Trap Rock River Falls
- Conditions:
- Cold, cloudy, very snowy
- Companions:
- Logan
- Vehicle:
- Saturn Vue
Even though the snow was coming in thick and fast, I had recently found out that there were two waterfalls in the Keweenaw that I hadn't visited yet and was determined to visit them before the year was up. Heading north with Logan in my girlfriend's car, we made our way to Copper City in good time and, more on a hunch then anything else, parked on Mohawk Street and hiked along a two-track into the woods.
The only time I heard or saw of these falls was by a series of pictures posted online, which called them Copper City Falls, then corrected to Queen Anne's Falls. After looking at a few satellite photos and topo maps, I noticed a speck of white along Fulton Creek located a short distance out of Copper City. I didn't bring a map or compass with me on this trip, expecting an easy stroll near town, but underestimated the distance we would walk. Logan and I eventually cut off the two-track to the creek and followed it down to the falls, and though we made it out in good time, the entire hike did take us about a half hour longer then I expected.
Our next stop was a roadside dam along the Trap Rock River. I'd barely consider these a falls, but seeing as it's the only drop along a well-known river and it is rather easy to view, decided to stop there and photograph it. I left Logan in the car, as I didn't even go more then twenty feet from him the entire time. Afterwards, we slipped and slid our way back to Houghton along the backroads east of Lake Linden. I kind of expected this to be the last journey to an unknown area with the heavy snow and cold weather, and was glad that the puppy and I found everything we were looking for without mishap.
